Accessibility statement

This website has been coded to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0, level 3. It also meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 - Working Draft, at the time of writing this.

My aim has been to make it available to as many people as possible, regardless of device. If you notice any problems, please contact me.

Semantic markup

The coding of the site separates content from presentation using XHTML and CSS. This means that all information will be presented correctly even if your browser does not support style sheets. All code has been validated and conforms to the W3C standards.

Headings

Headings have been wrapped in the appropriate markup tags (EG - h1, h2, h3, h4). The hierarchy is as follows:

h1 - Is for the main logo of the site, so the content won't change.
h2 - Will be for the main title of the page and if there are links to the blog on the page, there will be a h2 to indicate they are there also.
h3, h4, h5, h6 - Will be all sub headings.

This site uses sIFR to create graphical headings. Please read further below under Javascript.

Navigation

I have added a few navigation aids o this site. I have however, not included Accesskeys. This is because there have been many reports on them conflicting with assistive software shortcuts. Accessify.com explains further in The Trouble With Accesskeys

Skip navigation link

I have included a skip navigation link at the top of the page. This is hidden using CSS for aesthetic reasons, but those using assistive technologies or non-CSS browsers will see it. Also, it will appear when people tab through the site.

Rel= links

All pages have rel information for home, help, contact. These are for navigation aid in text-based browsers and screen readers. You can turn on viewing options of these also if you are using Opera or Mozilla.

Links and acronyms

I have made an effort to keep links descriptive enough to make sense out of context. In the event of this not being possible, like a read more link in the blog, the title of the post will link to the same place and be the descriptive link. I have also used titles where necessary to provide further information.

No links will open on a new window and there are no popups within this site.

Acronyms

This site makes use of the acronym tag to explain the meaning. In most cases only the first mention of the acronym, such as XHTML, will contain the definition. There will of course be instances where I have missed one, please feel free to point it out by contacting me.

Javascript and Flash

This site makes use of unobtrusive Javascript. That means that it will still function and display correctly with scripts turned off. The site by default has no Flash, although this may change as posts are added to the blog.

sIFR

This site uses a combination of Javascript and Flash called sIFR to create graphical headings that are scaleable. If you would like to enlarge the graphical headings, please refresh your browser after increasing the font size.

sIFR is designed so that you will still get the headings as normal web text if you are using a browser that doesn't support it, or has Javascript and/or Flash disabled. I am using sIFR version 3, so it won't work in older browsers such as IE5, but you will still get the normal text.
